Only one thing to say that matters:

If you want the creationists to crawl back under the rock then we need new heroes in Science. Nasa brings them all together under one roof. Fund NASA and you fund science as a cultural phenomena.

"NASA is a force like none other:"

The case:

Or if you just want to feel patriotic and emotional:

We sit here on our PCs/Macs/SmartPhones and tablets because of NASAs need to make small, effective, light things....and because it was a degree of heroic in society, to be able to make that stuff up with slide rules, drafting tables, and pencils and t squares and models once upon a time....as far as "government creating jobs," this is an example of how developments by government agencies can be translated into the private market for production and use. But the government only got the money to do it because a young President told the Nation (and the world) we would be going to the moon, and "we" bought in on the rationale for the expenditures.

That's leadership, and that's the undivided (with some critics, but not the majority), unified economy and workforce and educational system, ergo the cultural piece of the puzzle.

But, let us not forget, the threat of a nuclear attack led to the demand to go to the moon. While the goal is noble and adventurous, it was more to develop the military ability to attain and command the "high ground" that was the real reason Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon 7/20/69.

And as with so many other "outcomes" of the war like process of military operations, peaceful things can and do occur, even if the original intent was to harm and not help other humans. War drive innovation. It is a fact we have to come to understand and learn how to change this....

Rightwingers cought on to this and that is why they defund NASA. They hate NASA because it is an example of govt working via tax money and of course of science that disproves their supernatural world views. They dress it up with talk about "small govt" and private businesses can do it better" even though that is BS.

If we took the defense budget and halved it and then used that difference to fund NASA missions who knows how great our future world would be. But it will be great if we did that.
